Founded by the Spanish in 1524, Granada can be considered the first major European town founded in American soil, and for many years remained as one of most important cities of the spanish colonial empire. It is sometimes called 'The Great Sultana' in recognition of its beautiful colonial architectural heritage, many of which can be still admired today.
